1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 “For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.”

Turning to God from idols (Click here to hear this great study by Dr. J. Vernon McGee).  Here is a summary of that audio teaching which is much more thorough. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10: “For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” The church in Thessalonica turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. See v. 3. Work of faith (turned to God from idols), labour of love (to serve the living God), patience of hope (to wait for His Son from heaven). Paul preached Christ and they turned to God from idols (not they turned from idols to God). When they turned to God, that is the work of faith; that is what faith did. John 6:29 “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” When they turned to God, they automatically turned from idols—that is repentance. The turning from something is repentance. You can’t turn to Christ without turning from sin. Jesus Christ saves from sin. When a man turns to Christ, he turns from his sin. The message of repentance needs to be preached to the church, as it was preached to the 7 churches in Revelation 2 and 3. The Thessalonians were now serving God, the labor of love. You cannot serve Christ unless you love him. See Jn. 14.15. If you do not love Him, forget trying to serve Him. Waiting for His Son from heaven doesn’t mean sit down and relax. It means get busy for the Lord. A believer is to labor in love.

Does shedding tears mean repentance? Both Ruth and Orpah shed tears. Only one repented. Dr. McGee explains this from one of broadcasts in Ruth. To hear his short 8 min. 23 sec. study on Ruth 1.14-18, click here.

The Great Falling Away: Evangelists Shying Away From Preaching Repentance (111715)(Entire article reproduced at the very end below)

The Three-Fold Sin Of Easybelievism by James L. Melton (112115)

Directions for the treatment of apostates, heretics, those who wish to argue principle without knowledge, understanding and wisdom (I have started to emphasize these in bold font.). For example:

  • 1“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:  Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen” (1 Ti. 6.20-21). ”  “But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself” (Titus 3.9-11).
  • Mt. 12.33-37 “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure Is.55.6-7bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”]
  • Mt. 13.23: “But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
  • Mt. 15.18-19 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:”

I have seen the destruction of the 123 pray after me gospel sold today. I have seen young men desire suicide because of the mass confusion a changeless gospel causes. I have seen young people have no victory over sin in their lives and ask them if they are saved and they say well i prayed when i was at a VBT or a junior church. I have went for assurance since then(Show me in the Bible where man assures another man he is saved and not the Holy Ghost that does so. I have seen people want to die and no understanding of what salvation is . Live a sin filled satanic life because some preacher says just believe. They dont plow the ground first . They dont preach the law a schoolmaster to bring them to Christ. They dont teach them they need to be saved from their sins. They teach them HELL is there problem. So these young people grow up and destroy the lives of other. They ruin marriages and they ruin children- abuse wives and children. They are wicked deviants. When asked are you saved? Why yes they respond I believe Jesus Christ is my personal saviour. No Change, no desire to read the Bible, No desire to pray, assemble with the saints. live a life of victory . They dont care for their Supposed Father- they dont like my Father in Heaven, they dont like his BOOK his holiness , his rules or commands and quite frankly they dont like his children either. WHY? THEY ARE NOT SAVED. IF YOU CAN FIGHT THAT A MAN HAS A SIN PROBLEM AND SIN HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM HIS GOD- IF YOU CAN FIGHT REPENTANCE OF SIN AND FEEL THE NEED TO WAR AGAINST IT THERE IS GOOD POSSIBILITY YOU DONT HAVE THE HOLY GHOST IN YOU. CONDITIONS OF SALVATION ARE CLEAR 1. EXCEPT YE REPENT YOU SHALL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH 2. BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED CONDITIONS ARE NOT WORKS- ONLY SHALLOW SIN LOVING BIBLE REJECTING HARDENED PEOPLE WITHOUT THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN THEM BELIEVE THESE THINGS ARE WORKS OF MAN GOD GRANTS REPENTANCE AND FAITH- THEY ARE GIFTS OF GOD- HE SAID SO. SO AM I PASSIONATE ABOUT IT ? YOU BET I HAVE TO CLEAN UP THE DESTROYED FAMILIES AND CHILDREN AND LIVES AFTER THE FUNDIES ARE DONE WITH THEM AND HAVE USED THEM FOR WHAT THEY GET OUT OF THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Adam had no problem “believing”. He walked and talked with God. His problem was rebellion and sin. And Paul tells us clearly that we have a sin problem. In ADAM all die. The wages of sin is death. Etc ad nauseum. The entire Bible from Ge 3 onward shows this to be true. And it still is. Thus the need to preach as Paul did. Repentance toward God (a change of direction) AND faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. The faith saves. But only saves the repentant who cry out to be saved from their sins. Mt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. So, did Jesus come to save us from sins??? Or unbelief??? Ask Curtis Hutson’s disciples and you get heresy. Easy believism which has resulted in more false converts than likely anytime in history. But maybe that is just me. :-)”

This is one of the many citations above. Is God simply asking Israel to change their minds and believe on him for forgiveness of sins??? Or is he telling them to turn from sins?? Clearly the latter. I could cite every case of forgiveness in the entire Bible and its clear predication upon repentance. But I already did that in a note on my wall. This doctrine is clear from cover to cover. It has to be a difficult act to miss it. Again, I will say that I am not proposing “works” saving anyone. Repentance alone does not save. Only faith saves. However, is saves a heart which is in a state of repentance. And clearly that is taught by Jesus.”

David Ickes also commented on Jason Cooley‘s status. 10/26/13David wrote: “None is asking God to “quit” sinning. We are simply pointing out the every case in relation to man it has to do with turning from sin in contrition for sin. Especially when it comes to salvation. And clearly at that. I enjoy Webster’s 1828 once in a while. Good resource and all. But if we stick to that KJV, we clearly know what is meant when the preachers said “Repent”. Changing the discussion to the word’s application to God when we are talking about the word’s application to man has no bearing upon the discussion because we are talking about the need for man to repent. It is like I asked Tony, in Lk 17 when Jesus tells us that repentance is necessary to receive forgiveness, even between men, are we going to imagine that Jesus was telling the guilty party all they need to do is “believe” on the victim to receive forgiveness?? I quoted a BUNCH of Bible above. There really is no getting around this fact. Also, when God repented, it resulted in a change of action. Hmmmmm. His clear course was destruction. And he acted with mercy instead of judgment. :-)”

Kyle Hicks (friends with Jason Cooley) also commented on Jason Cooley‘sstatus. 10/26/13Kyle wrote: “REPENTANCE: According to the Websters 1828 Dictionary is a FRENCH word which is out of old Latin, it means “REAL PENTINENCE”… a kin to CONTRITION brokeness or regret or sorrow over actions or decisions. God repenteded thatHe made man. (regret) God Repented of the evil that He was going to lose on Ninevah, (Changed His mind) None would tell God to quit His sinning right guys?”

My response to the above: God repented over what He had done, which was not sin. God desires man to repent over that which he has done in violation of God’s law. In both cases, repentance involves “REAL PENTINENCE”… a kin to CONTRITION brokeness or regret or sorrow over actions or decisions. Dear Brother, your reasoning is not sound.

David Ickes also commented on Jason Cooley‘s status. 10/26/13David wrote: “I think Frederick that this is a good example of sin. Disobeying the Father’s commandments is sin is it not??? ¶ Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. The son turned from his intended SIN (disobeying the Father’s command). Which here is defined as “repenting”. Perfect verse for what I have been saying. Thanks for pointing this one out.”

Pastor Jason Cooley 10/24/13:REPENTANCE IS NOT MERE CHANGING ONE’S MIND:
Another man who has widely influenced the doctrine of repentance held by independent Baptists is the late Curtis Hutson, former editor of the Sword of the Lord. His 1986 booklet “Repentance: What Does the Bible Teach?” has been distributed widely. Hutson boldly denied that repentance means to turn from sin (p. 4). He denied that repentance is sorrow for sin (p. . He even denied that repentance means “a change of mind that leads to a change of action” (p. 16). He claimed that repentance simply is “to change one’s mind” and that it did not necessarily result in a change of life. In an attempt to build his doctrine of repentance, Curtis Hutson quoted Scripture that appears to support his position but he ignored the Scriptures that plainly denounce his position. He misquoted the writings of men like his predecessor John R. Rice. He also mixed in a heavy dose of human reasoning. For example, he stated that repentance couldn’t mean to turn from sin because man cannot turn from all sin. That is a smokescreen, because no one has defined repentance as turning from all sin. The historic definition of repentance, as it applies to salvation, is a change of mind toward God and sin that results in a change of life. Repentance is not turning from all sin in the sense of some sort of sinless perfection; it is a change of mind toward sin so that the sinner no longer intends to walk in rebellion against God. Dr. Hutson also reasoned that to say repentance involves turning from sin is a works salvation. That is nonsense. The Thessalonians turned from the sin of idolatry (1 Thess. 1:9). Obviously, that does not mean they thought that their works had a part in their salvation. The fact that God requires that we turn from sin does not mean that salvation is by works. We know that the works are the fruit of genuine salvation, not the cause of it. Repentance, defined as turning to God from sin, is not a works salvation, as Dr. Hutson falsely claimed. It is the sinner’s obedient response to the Holy Spirit’s conviction (John 16:8). Dr. Hutson’s entire line of reasoning about repentance was unscriptural.

Hutson even carried his false doctrine of repentance so far that he modified the 1989 edition of “Soul-Stirring Songs and Hymns,” which is the hymnal published by the Sword of the Lord. Under the direction of Pastor Tom Stastny the members of Beaver Valley Baptist Church of Montrose, British Columbia, went through the hymnal and documented many changes. In an open letter to Independent Baptists of Canada dated April 1, 2000, Pastor Stastny wrote: “Several of the changes center around the doctrine of repentance i.e. #245 (The Old Account Was Settled”), #288 (“I Am Resolved”), #318 (“Give Me Thy Heart”), #444 (“Almost Persuaded”). The 1989 version greatly weakens this doctrine in its overall message.” Following are the changes that were made to these four hymns:

“The Old Account Was Settled”
4th verse — “O sinner seek the Lord, repent of all your sin, For thus He hath commanded if” CHANGED TO “O sinner, trust the Lord, be cleansed of all your sin, For thus He hath provided for.”

“I Am Resolved”
4th verse DELETED (“I am resolved to enter the Kingdom, leaving the paths of sin…”)

“Give Me Thy Heart”
2nd verse — “turn now from sin and from evil depart” CHANGED TO “trust in me only, I’ll never depart.”

“Almost”
1st and 2nd verses DELETED — “Almost I trusted in Jesus, Almost I turned from my sin; Almost I yielded completely to the sweet striving within.” “Almost I said, ‘Jesus, save me.’ Almost submitted my will; Almost persuaded to serve Him, but I rejected Him still.”

In a letter to Pastor Statsny dated March 31, 2000, Shelton Smith promised that the Sword would publish a new edition of the hymnal that would “use the original editions” of the hymns. As of 2007 this has not been done, and the changes themselves in the 1989 edition under Hutson’s administration speak for themselves. DAVID CLOUD

END OF PASTOR JASON’S COMMENT from 10/24/13

Erick Frank wrote 2/15/14: “”Salvation does NOT produce a changed LIFE. Salvation produces a changed PERSON. Whether that person’s LIFE changes or not is up to him. Salvation ENABLES and EMPOWERS a person to change their life. If that person chooses not to change his life and/or doesn’t get FED, his life will NOT be changed, and that proves nothing about the authenticity of his salvation to anyone who rightly divides the word. – Joseph Dearing” I say this in charity: If what Dearing says here is true. Dearing is a heretic (you can tell him I said so, because he blocked me) and following the cult of soul winning to the extreme depth’s of damning men and woman to hell, by getting people these lost people to say a “prayer” even IF there is NO conviction by the lost person. These people say a prayer, but their still lost in their SIN and will die in the sin and go to hell, if they don’t repent of their SIN! According to Dearing and the cult of soul winning. A sodomite can say a “prayer” and get “saved” from HELL, and NOT their sins. This sodomite can live in their sodomy, enjoy their sodomy and die of a STD, becasue they were living IN and ENJOYING their sodomy. According to Dearing, that sodomite GOT SAVED, even though they NEVER became a NEW creature in Christ Jesus, and their lifestyle CHANGED. WOW, Dearing is is dangerous water………… 2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Tony Brown 2/16/14 What I think is irrelevant: the question is what saith the scripture?
1. Paul exhorts the believers in Rome in chapter 6 of that epistle to YIELD themselves to God and not to YIELD their members to unrighteousness. He said this to SAVED people. Therefore a saved person can yield themselves to the world, the flesh, the Devil at any given moment or series of moments.
2. Your misuse of 2 Cor 5:17 is typical. Remember, the Bible is first and foremost a DOCTRINAL book (2 Tim 3:16). “If any man be IN CHRIST” What does it mean to be in Christ? 1 Cor 12:13; Gal 3:26-28 It means to be born again..If you are born again you are a new creature, literally. You are now a son of God (though not manifested 1 Jn 3:2, Rom 8). Becoming a new creature doesn’t mean all of your old fleshly, carnal, sinful desires suddenly disappear and if were a drinker you suddenly have no desire to drink ever again (though that can happen), it means how you look at things now is new because of the Spirit in you. It is directly related to v.16 – the things passed away has to do with knowing after the flesh and the all things new w/ v18 as all things are of God as in the spiritual things.

What you are advocating is Calvinism, specifically the P in TULIP. ie. If a person is really saved they will act like this and not like that. If a person is really saved they won’t commit those sins or live in gross sin. But if they live do in gross sin they will eventually repent and persevere in their salvation. blah, blah, blah And of course you are God’s official inspector of “real” Christians. But what do I know, I’m just a hamite heretick.

The Great Falling Away – Evangelists Shying Away From Preaching Repentance

November 17, 2015

By Jack Minor

The watering down of the Gospel from being an imperative for lost sinners needing to be saved from Hell to mere suggestion or another lifestyle continues, as a new report indicates evangelists in one of America’s largest denominations are now steering away from calling sinners to repentance in their messages.

The new revelation comes from an early report of the August conference of the Research Services of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. The report is called 1001 New Worshipping Communities, and it states that “millennials respond to a different style of evangelism than did previous generations.”

“Millennials, it is argued, do not feel guilt and shame the same way older generations do. … As such, they do not respond to what one person referred to as ‘fire and brimstone scare tactics,'” read the report.

“Telling them that they are sinners and need to repent does not work. Millennials respond to evangelism that tells them the world is [broken], and it is only through Jesus that it can be fixed.”

The problem is the report suggests that in the past people enthusiastically received the Gospel, and that, contrary to the suggestion that millennials do not respond to the Gospel the same way, the reality is the Gospel has always met with resistance.

During the ministry of Gen. William Booth, who founded the Salvation Army, as the men and women in his organization would attempt to share the Gospel with sailors along city docks, they would have rockets launched at them, while others would attack and hurl rotten vegetables at them and their uniforms. During the preaching of Billy Sunday and DL Moody, they would often meet with resistance as they preached against the specific sins of their era.

The Apostle Paul said the preaching of the cross was foolishness to the world and he was often attacked and even stoned once for preaching the Gospel. This has been a common thread throughout church history.

The report went on to advocate for more of a lifestyle evangelism approach rather than offering a plain Gospel presentation.

“The people we spoke with primarily emphasize service and mission as their way to honor God by being God’s ‘hands and feet.’ And, through modeling this behavior publicly and around non-Christians, they hope to bring more people to God in a subtle, less ‘fire and brimstone’ manner.”

“They also mention the importance of going out into the community and working side-by-side with non-Christians as well as other Christians. In this strategy, leaders often (but not always) emphasize the importance of not engaging in God-talk while doing service activities.”

What this fails to address is that by doing so they are essentially suggesting that salvation is not the only way to heaven, which contradicts Jesus when he said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” The reality is a person cannot be saved unless they realize what they are being saved from. If a person simply accepts Christ because he or she thinks it is a good idea, then they are following a philosophy rather than an individual.

People today will respond to the Gospel just like people of old if it is presented in a straightforward manner. I have done so on a number of occasions with people ranging from prisoners to executives. I present it matter-of-factly, such as when I take them to the Great White Throne Judgment where it mentions that ALL liars shall have their part in the lake of fire. Then I ask them, according to this verse where does it say any of us who have ever told a lie deserve to end up?

Whereas they may disagree as to whether liars go to hell, they must admit the verse says that is where they are going. It is then much easier to share with them the good news of why Jesus died for them. The Gospel has worked for over 2,000 years and it will continue to work. We don’t need to come up with a newer method, thinking we know better than God does about how to lead people to Christ.
